Mentoring
At BEST Skills Academy, mentoring is woven into every part of school life. It isn’t a separate program, it is a daily part of how we teach, guide, and support every student. Through consistent encouragement, accountability, and meaningful connection, students learn to take ownership of their learning, their choices, and their future.
Our mentoring approach works hand in hand with academic instruction, helping students build confidence, develop strong habits, and experience real, measurable progress. As they learn to set goals, make responsible decisions, and trust their own judgment, they begin to see that success is within their reach.
The Four Pillars of Mentoring:
Our mentoring program is built around four pillars that promote academic mastery, character development, and readiness for life beyond school.
Education:
Our mentoring program is built around four pillars that promote academic mastery, character development, and readiness for life beyond school.
Government:
Students explore how local, state, and national governments operate and why active citizenship matters. They learn about civic responsibility, the role of government, and how laws and policies influence everyday life.
Personal Development:
Mentoring supports students in building character, leadership, and emotional awareness. Through lessons in communication, self-reflection, problem-solving, and resilience, students develop the confidence and interpersonal skills needed to thrive in school and beyond.
Economics:
Students are introduced to the fundamentals of personal finance and smart decision-making. Topics include earning, budgeting, saving, and investing — empowering them to make thoughtful choices now and as future adults.
How Mentoring Works
BEST mentoring combines interactive lessons, guided discussions, and real-world applications that connect directly to students’ daily experiences. Students participate in one hour of structured mentoring each day, with additional one-on-one support available whenever needed to keep them on track academically and personally.
Positive peer relationships are an essential part of our mentoring culture. Students learn to encourage, challenge, and hold one another accountable building teamwork, leadership, and shared success.
Families consistently report that BEST mentoring builds confidence, independence, and a stronger sense of direction. Through this process, students develop improved communication skills, greater financial literacy, and a clearer understanding of their strengths, goals, and future opportunities.
Mentoring also introduces students to a variety of careers and community experiences, helping them see that success is achievable and opening their eyes to new possibilities for their future.
Family Partnership: A Shared Commitment
BEST mentoring thrives on a strong partnership between families and our staff. We encourage parents and guardians to stay actively involved by maintaining open communication, reviewing student goals, and supporting their child’s learning journey at home.
When families and educators work together, we can align expectations, celebrate progress, and ensure every student receives the guidance and encouragement needed to grow academically and personally.
If you’re interested in learning more about BEST, we invite you to schedule a meeting with Robert McKenzie. Students are welcome to join the conversation to share their goals, questions, and aspirations.
