We had the opportunity recently to host our community partners, parents and supporters at the BEST Skills Academy Partner Luncheon. Guests had a chance to hear updates from our Executive Director Marquis Flemings and Mentoring Director Robert McKenzie about how students at BEST Skills Academy are improving their math and reading scores, learning important life skills and financial literacy, and thriving under the format mentoring approach to education.
Marquis and Robert shared information on why middle school students could be falling behind in traditional school settings.

“We’ve seen data that shows middle school students are behind grade level in reading and math across the board,” said Robert. “The gap is even wider for students of color. But after enrolling at BEST Skills Academy and taking part in our customized paced learning plan, we’re witnessing students gaining more than one grade level in math and more than 1.69 grade level improvement in reading. In addition, students report feeling less stressed and enjoying learning again.”
Dr. Atrez Flemings, Assistant Professor of Education at Southern Wesleyan University, and Long Branch Baptist Church Pastor Sean Dogan also shared their thoughts about the positive impact BEST Skills Academy is making in our community.
Check out some photos from the event below. We hope you’ll join us for our next partner gathering to learn more about why and how BEST Skills Academy is working to bridge the education gap for middle school students in Greenville, SC.
